Reasons to See a Medical Transcriptionist

Medical transcriptionists collaborate with your healthcare practitioner behind the scenes to ensure that your medical history is accurately recorded and distributed to other physicians as needed. You're unlikely to see them during the course of your treatment.

You may examine their work, however, if you request your medical records. It is a good idea to double-check your medical records for correctness.

With a few exceptions, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) allows you the right to examine and get copies of your medical records. Many providers have websites where you can access your electronic medical record (EMR).

If they don't, you still have the right to see your records, keep them private, and request a modification if you believe there is a mistake.
